Would you like to understand the causes of constipation in babies and discover the rapid effects that a foot reflexology session of up to 30 minutes can have on your baby? I also explain when to consult and how a baby foot reflexology session works, so there are no surprises.

Can foot reflexology help your baby when they are constipated? Should you schedule a baby foot reflexology session for constipation?
Let us look at this together right away!

Understanding constipation in babies

A baby is born with intestines that are not yet fully mature. Digestion is therefore often difficult. It takes a lot of energy and can sometimes be uncomfortable for them. You may sometimes see them wriggle and tense up during digestion.

When stools become dry and hard, and your baby turns very red and has to strain to pass them, there is a strong likelihood that they are suffering from constipation.

De plus, des petits stress ou une modification de l'alimentation de la maman ( si bébé est allaité), peuvent parfois se rajouter à l'immaturité des intestins qui encouragent la constipation de bébé.

What is foot reflexology?

It is a gentle, non-invasive method that, through touch on reflex zones on the feet (hands, head, or ears, etc.), encourages the body’s natural regulation. For a detailed explanation of foot reflexology, please refer to the article I wrote on the subject.

It promotes an overall release in the body and mind and encourages deep relaxation, which is important in itself, as our digestive system works better when we are relaxed. Baby foot reflexology for constipation therefore combines the relaxation benefits of the method with the precision of reflex zones directly linked to digestion. Foot reflexology can also support a little one’s sleep learning; I discuss this in more detail in this article.

It is a method that is perfectly suited to babies, with simple techniques that I can easily teach parents. This way, sessions can continue at home, for lovely moments to share.

Baby foot reflexology for constipation: how does it work?

Baby foot reflexology sessions for constipation are shorter than those for adults. They last about 30 minutes. The aim is therefore a simple and effective session. The goal is to stimulate all reflex zones linked to the contraction of smooth muscles (which line our digestive system and help digested food move through our intestines) and to the activation of the autonomic nervous system, which largely drives this digestive motility because it is linked to relaxation.

In general, foot reflexology will help your little one relax. And the digestive system works better when the body is relaxed.

More specifically, I will work on the pineal gland, the spine, the stomach, the liver, the intestines, and the large intestine. Not all of these areas will necessarily need to be worked on in depth. Only two or three will be my focus for the baby foot reflexology constipation session. This keeps the session length manageable for your baby while addressing what matters most for their constipation.

The benefits can be quite rapid: gas, a nappy that fills by the end of the session. The aim is to encourage overall relaxation and the body’s regulation, which can sometimes take a little longer.

Typical baby foot reflexology session for constipation

When should you consult for baby foot reflexology for constipation?

First of all, it is essential to remember that, as a parent, you are best placed to sense whether your child is in distress or not. Trust yourself: if crying is systematic, if you feel something is not right, do not hesitate to contact your midwife and/or paediatrician to check certain points (cow’s milk protein intolerance can be one possible avenue, for example). A baby can go without a bowel movement every day without there necessarily being any reason to worry.

For a baby foot reflexology session for constipation, this can be planned as a preventive measure, once or twice a month during your baby’s first 3 months. You can also book an appointment when you feel your baby is uncomfortable in their tummy.

A few small things to put in place to provide gentle support:

In some cases where digestion is uncomfortable, small changes are sometimes enough:

  • Taking probiotics
  • Babywearing in a wrap or carrier, thanks to the natural tummy massage it provides
  • Carrying your baby tummy-down on your forearm
  • Bending the thighs towards the tummy
  • The techniques on the soles of the feet that I show during the session

These are all interesting options that can help while your baby’s intestines mature.

Book an appointment for your little one!

I look forward to welcoming you and your baby at the practice or at home. Home visits are available for the first 3 months. Do not hesitate to take advantage of this.
