My pregnancy test dated back to one week before the first class, and my exam date was within two days of my due date. I therefore experienced the practice of reflexology on myself throughout that pregnancy! Reflexology during pregnancy is an experience I find interesting to share, as there are many myths surrounding the practice.

Throughout my training, I was able to deconstruct certain myths about reflexology during pregnancy in order to maintain a safe practice adapted to every trimester. I invite you to explore some of these myths!

Reflexology during pregnancy is only for physical pain, not for emotional or psychological issues

Myth: Many believe that reflexology is limited solely to treating physical symptoms, such as lower back pain, nausea, or fatigue.

Reality: In fact, reflexology can also be beneficial for emotional and mental well-being during pregnancy. It helps reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and provide a general sense of calm, which is crucial during this period. The session itself is a moment of calm and self-reflection, and my goal is for the effects to stay with you as long as possible. Receiving a reflexology session during pregnancy generally allows for better sleep. And we know that sleep is the primary ally for reducing anxiety and gaining perspective.

Reflexology is dangerous during the first trimester

Myth: There are beliefs that reflexology could be dangerous during the first trimester, especially due to the early development of the fetus.

Reality: There are precautions to be taken for certain types of pregnancies. Indeed, I recommend that individuals being monitored for a so-called “high-risk” pregnancy wait until the second trimester for a foot reflexology session. For these individuals, we will focus on auricular reflexology (ears) or facial reflexology, as these methods present no contraindications.
For low-risk pregnancies, the reflexologist must take certain precautions (certain reflex zones are to be avoided) and the touch must be adapted. The session must, above all, be reassuring for the mother-to-be. Many women find benefits as early as the first trimester for reducing fatigue and nausea.

Reflexology is a substitute for medical care

Myth: Some people believe that reflexology during pregnancy can replace traditional medicine or prenatal care.

Reality: Reflexology is a complementary approach, certainly not a substitute. It can help relieve certain pregnancy symptoms (nausea, fatigue, pain), but it does not replace regular medical visits or treatments prescribed by a doctor. Each person is primarily supported by the medical profession and can then turn to reflexology to accompany and relieve various symptoms, such as constipation, pelvic or ligament pain, lower back pain, or nausea.

Reflexology during pregnancy is too intense

Myth: There is an idea that reflexology might be too intense or painful for a pregnant woman due to her body’s increased sensitivity.

Reality: Reflexology, when practiced correctly, should be relaxing and gentle. The reflexologist adapts the pressure and technique according to the needs and comfort of the pregnant woman. Every person has their own sensitivity, and it is essential to take this into account during a reflexology session. The session is generally a moment of relaxation, not of pain or tension.

If you are pregnant or planning to be, I would be delighted to introduce you to reflexology, which personally allowed me to go through my second pregnancy with complete serenity.

I completed my reflexology training during my second pregnancy.
